Wet and windy conditions hit the Benchmark Tour competitors, making the nine sectors of unsealed road, totalling 13.5km, a difficult assignment. Jeannie Kuhajek (Star & Garter Tasman) retained her womens leaders jersey with a well deserved second place result, moving her to 24 points, ahead of second placed Joanne Keisanowski on 17, and todays winner Josie Giddens (Cycle Surgery/Lowe and Ass.) on 10 in 3rd place.
David Ayre was the best placed finisher for the Star & Garter Tasman team, coming home in 11th place, after a breakaway move at the 50k mark orchestrated by team mate Kieran Hambrook. These two riders had a lead of over 4 minutes at the first 'rabine', but were reeled in as riders from Cycle Surgery/Scott, and Benchmark, took control on the 3 laps of a 7k finishing circuit. The race was won by Scott Lyttle (Cycle Surgery/Scott), setting his team up to also win the days team title, and Mark Spessot (Cycle Surgery/Scott) also taking the Masters title. Daniel Barry (Benchmark Team and Star & Garter club member) leads the U23 Classment, coming home in 4th place today, and holds second place overall on 56 points, behind tour leader Gordon McCauley on 59 points, who finished the race in 7th place.
