Forsyth Barr Winter Series 09 - Race 10 - The Finals

Caleb Hill U23 wins the 09 Forsyth Barr Winter Road Series.

Going into the final race equal on points with David Ayre Sen. it was a matter of who would be the best Grade 1 climber at the end of the race, taking in a 1k uphill finish on the steepest section of road obtainable in the Hope/Waimea district. But it was U19 rider Thomas Hodgson who outclimbed his peers to take the race maximum double points, but Caleb Hill finished within metres of Hodgson, and clear of David Ayre, to win the Series by 2 points, with another U19 rider Thomas Ashley just behind in 4th place moving him up the leader board and into 5th place overall.

The womens series was taken out by new Polish rider Alicja Maslowska Sen. having enough points in the bag to stay clear of Liz Roberts M2 and Karen Fulton Sen, who finished the series in 2nd and 3rd place.

Grade 2 was the most popular for numbers participating with 66 riders lining up throughout the series, predominatly made up from the Masters 1- 5 grades, and U17 riders, and it was a new U17 rider Jake Glover that took out the race, once again outclimbing his peers to snatch the race win. The series went to an inform Garry Overend M5 amassing 104 points from the 10 races, with John Reid M4 second on 90 and third Grant Striling M3 on 60 points.

Grade 3 saw another new U17 rider Daniel Ellison win todays race, but it was Nigel Smith M3 winning the Series by amassing a record 115 points, 2nd place Pete Rickards M4 on 79, in third place Robbie Hill M3 on 75.

Grade 4 series win went to Dave MacManus M3, from Ross Ellison M3 in second place, and ' vino and chef extroidanaire' Brian Samuels M6 taking third.

Overall a record 233 riders partcipated, with a record 35 women lining up for the series. Results here.

The final climb start for race1 - Star and Garter Winter Race Series

At the critical point of the grade 1 race for the top 3 riders as they climb Aniseed Hill, an attack is launched by Thomas Hodgson (L) to go clear of David Ayre (Centre), and put the pressure on Caleb Hill (R), with Thomas Ashley just behind.
