Benchmark Tour, Race 6, "Hell of the South", the The 'Aquados Tour of Selwyn' held 24/8/2008

Race review by Greg Hulme - click here (PDF format)

The name "The Hell of the South" certainly lived up to expectations as one of the toughest one day races ever put on in New Zealand, with 9 unsealed sectors, and steady rain during the later stages of the event, turning the 'rabines' into slush, and deepening the many potholes into mini mud pools!

Sector 5, one of the worst rabines, with Dean Fulton and George Bennett (obscured) near the front.

Jeremy Yates leads through sector 9, the first of nine rabines

Karen Fulton wearing the Tour leaders jersey exits sector 9

Chris Nicholson on the front through sector 2

The field reduced to 31 riders on sector 3

George Bennett regained the bunch after puncturing on sector 4

George Bennett and David Ayre both finished with the leading group, Dean Fulton punctured on the 2nd to last sector, but finished strongly. Al Dempsey and Kieran Hambrook both had a very good team ride to finish the event mid field. Results for the full team classment still to come, but Cycling Otago were the 1st. team on the day
